Can you believe it is already October?!? I am still finding my rhythm of the school year but I feel like October is when things really take off. I created these fun 1st grade Phonics Morning Work activities that have been a hit on my campus!
Every day students have a simple sheet with phonics activities. The October phonics warm ups students practice short vowels O & U along with word families, capitalization and sight words. This is a perfect way to start your day while monitoring students progress and retention of grade level skills.
I also encouraged some teachers to send these pages home for weekly homework. This is a simple way to keep students learning while at home. The activities are fun and simple.

These simple warm ups are great for additional phonics practice. In the month of October students review short vowel O and short vowel U words. Students also review writing complete sentences with capital letters and punctuation. Finally, students practice sight words from the FRY 100 list.
These are a perfect routine to start in your classroom. Students can come in and start working on these phonics bell ringers while eating breakfast (if you have that in your classroom!) or while you are welcoming students into the room. These warm ups set the tone for the day and are predictable so students can easily get started on their owns.
I also love how these warm ups allow students to use not only pencil, but crayons or markers! I think it is so essential for students to use markers and crayons in the classroom, not everything needs to be so serious!
